Snowshoe day tour in the Harz mountains

March 3, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The Harz mountains have over 1.60 m of snow in the higher altitudes. So there will be another snowshoe tour before the end of winter.
This tour will start in Schierke in the eastern Harz and proceed over the Hohneklippen and the Pferdekopf to the Kapellenklippe. The return route is along the Glashüttenweg to Schierke.
The current snow conditions are varied. In the lower regions (the Schierke train station is 687 m above sea level), the snow has become very crusty. But at altitudes over 800 m above sea level, there is beautiful powder snow.
We can make a stop at the shelter on the Hohneklippen. But this cabin is very difficult to find unless you know the area well, as no trail leads to it. The shelter is also half full of snow now and has hardly any room to sit.
The path from Fm-Seitz-Weg over Pferdekopf to Kapellenklippe is also difficult to find and we recommend using a GPS on the tour so you don’t become disoriented in the woods.

Schneeschuhtour an den Hohneklippen

– Starting point: Schierke parking lot (800 meters from Schierke train station)
– Altitude: Starting at about 650 meters above sea level / up to about 900 meters above sea level at Hohneklippen and Kapellenklippe (927 meters above sea level)
– Length: approx. 4-5 hours, depending on breaks
