Crossing the Stony Sea

March 14, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The Stony Sea is a mountain plateau in the Northern Alps. It forms part of the nine mountains making up the Berchtesgaden Alps and straddles German and Austrian territory (State of Salzburg). The Königssee Lake is located directly at the foot of its northern slopes.

The plan is for a 3-day tour to take place at the end of June involving two overnight stays in mountain huts. The starting point will be the Königssee Lake, and the tour will include a crossing of the Stony Sea.

One of the reasons why this trip was an obvious choice was the easy arrival and departure from Salzburg Airport.

The following stages are planned:
Day 1: Königssee Lake – Kärlinger Haus (1,630 m above sea level)
Day 2: Continue to the Riemannhaus (2,177 m above sea level)
Day 3: Descend to Saalfelden

The mood could not have been better as we embarked upon the trip on day 1. The first stage took us by wooden boat from the Königssee Lake through the early morning mist to St. Bartholomä.

From there the real trip through the Stony Sea begins.
